Cleaning
Dental cleanings, also known as professional cleanings or prophylaxis, are routine dental procedures performed by a dentist or dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from the teeth. These cleanings help maintain oral health by preventing cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride treatments are professional dental procedures where a high concentration of fluoride is applied to the teeth to help prevent tooth decay and strengthen tooth enamel. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps protect teeth from cavities by making the enamel more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and plaque.
Emergency Screening
An emergency dental screening is a quick, focused examination performed by a dentist to assess the severity of a dental issue that requires urgent attention. The goal of the emergency dental screening is to determine the cause of the problem, evaluate the need for urgent treatment, and plan the next steps for addressing the issue.
Fillings
Dental fillings are materials used to restore a tooth that has been damaged by decay, injury, or wear. When a cavity forms in a tooth due to decay, a dentist removes the decayed portion and fills the space to restore the tooth's shape, function, and integrity. Fillings help prevent further decay and protect the tooth from additional damage.
Sealants
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made of plastic or resin material that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to help prevent cavities. These teeth are more prone to cavities due to their deep grooves and fissures, which can trap food/bacteria, making them harder to clean with brushing alone.
Referrals
A dental referral occurs when a general dentist or another healthcare provider directs a patient to a specialist for further evaluation, treatment, or care. This typically happens when the condition requires expertise beyond what the referring dentist can provide.
Scaling
Dental scaling is a professional cleaning procedure performed by a dentist or dental hygienist to remove plaque, tartar (also known as calculus), and bacteria from the surface of the teeth and below the gum line. It is typically recommended for individuals with gum disease or a significant buildup of plaque and tartar.
Root Planing
Root planing is a dental procedure often performed alongside dental scaling as part of a deep cleaning treatment for patients with gum disease, particularly periodontitis (advanced gum disease). While scaling removes plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth, root planing focuses on cleaning the surfaces of the tooth roots.
X-Rays
Dental X-rays are images taken of the teeth, gums, and surrounding bone structures using a small amount of radiation. These X-rays allow dentists to view areas of the mouth that are not visible during a regular dental examination, helping them diagnose and monitor various dental conditions.
Exams
A dental exam is a routine, professional evaluation of your oral health conducted by a dentist or dental hygienist. It’s designed to detect potential dental issues, such as cavities, gum disease, and other oral health problems, often before they become serious. Dental exams are an essential part of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing future dental complications.
